Attracting the next generation of software engineers

Future Combat Air System (FCAS)

Software is critical to the delivery and operational effectiveness of the Future Combat Air System (FCAS)

Meeting this evolving need will require a fundamental and rapid transformation of software development across the Defence sector. To address this challenge, partners in the FCAS consortium (specifically, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo, MBDA and the MOD) engaged Outsmart Insight to conduct a UK-wide survey to understand the motivations, expectations and skill sets of 200 computer science undergraduates planning a career in software engineering, as well as their perceptions of a career with FCAS and the defence sector more broadly. This summary provides an overview of the key findings.

Reaching out beyond Defence

BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Leonardo and MBDA – engaged Outsmart Insight, an organisation that specialises in helping companies and government agencies stay ahead of change and at the forefront of innovation, to undertake an independent study to better understand the motivations, expectations, perceptions and skills of UK computer science students.
